Review: 2024 Dacia Jogger Extreme with Sleep Pack

What is it?

The Dacia Jogger has always been about giving you more for less, and the 2024 Jogger Extreme is no exception. With its blend of practicality, affordability, and now with the addition of a sleep pack, it's pushing the envelope in what you can expect from a family-oriented crossover. While the Dacia Jogger may not be a hardcore 4x4, it’s one of those vehicles that blends off-tarmac capability with day-to-day usability in a surprisingly effective way.

So let’s take a closer look.

On-Road

First impressions on the road? The Dacia Jogger Extreme is a pleasant surprise. For a vehicle that looks like a stretched MPV crossed with a rugged SUV, it handles itself on tarmac far better than expected. Under the bonnet, you'll find a modest 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine, producing a respectable 110bhp. It's actually quite nippy.  I had a wonderful time on the B5105 that twists and turns its way from Ruthin to Cerrigydrudion in North Wales - my favourite stretch of road.  Select the correct gear and it really will surprise you.

On the motorway, the Jogger feels stable and composed. It doesn’t float or wallow as you might expect from a vehicle designed to haul families and their gear across varying terrains. The suspension soaks up bumps and potholes with ease, which is impressive given its budget-friendly price tag. The steering, while not exactly sharp, is light and responsive enough to make city driving a breeze. And while you might not be taking corners at blistering speeds, the Jogger holds its own through bends without too much body roll.

The real joy of the on-road experience is its comfort over long distances. Whether you're popping down to the shops or on a road trip to the Highlands, it’s comfortable enough to keep you from squirming in your seat, with decent noise insulation from road and wind noise at cruising speeds. But, as with any budget-friendly model, you’ll notice a bit of engine noise under heavy acceleration. Think of it as a charming character trait, rather than a flaw.

Fuel-wise, after a week all types of driving, the Jogger achieved a respectable 38mpg.

Off-Road Capability: Grip Extender to the Rescue

Now, off-road capability isn’t typically the first thing that springs to mind when you hear the name Dacia, especially a 2WD model, but the Jogger Extreme does a commendable job with its Grip Extender system. This clever bit of tech isn't quite the same as having a full 4WD system, but for most light off-roading or rural expeditions, it’s surprisingly capable.

So, how does the Grip Extender work? It’s essentially a traction control system on steroids. Activated via a button on the dashboard, it’s designed to get you out of sticky situations like mud, snow, or loose gravel. When engaged, it limits the amount of power going to the wheels and increases traction, meaning you're less likely to spin out on tricky surfaces. Perfect for those spontaneous weekend getaways down muddy tracks or even the odd festival site that’s seen a bit too much rain.

On that topic, I did find myself on a drenched field whilst taking photos, it did look sketchy.  Initially the front wheels spun as I attempted to reach firmer ground, but pressing  the Grip Extender button, traction was found and I escaped a potentially embarrassing situation.

However, it’s important to remember that you’re not going to be scaling rock faces or wading through deep rivers, but for what it is - a rugged crossover designed for adventurous families, it performs admirably. Ground clearance is sufficient to tackle dirt lanes and rougher paths, and the Grip Extender does its job well enough to inspire confidence when the road (or lack thereof) gets a bit gnarly.

Interior

Step inside the 2024 Jogger Extreme, and you’re greeted by an interior that’s all about function over form, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Dacia knows its audience, and instead of cluttering the cabin with unnecessary frills, they’ve opted for a straightforward layout that works.

The Extreme trim comes with a rugged aesthetic, featuring dark leatherette upholstery, contrasting stitching, and a sprinkling of satin chrome accents that give it a more premium feel than you’d expect at this price point. The materials are durable, and while they might not scream luxury, they certainly feel like they can withstand the wear and tear of family life and adventurous outings.

You also get an 8” touchscreen infotainment system, which includes smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so navigation and entertainment are just a swipe away. The system is easy enough to use, though it’s not the snappiest or most advanced out there. But hey, for the price, you can’t really grumble.

There’s a wealth of storage spaces dotted around the cabin, from large door pockets to a deep centre console. The Jogger is all about practicality, and that’s clear when you look at the space on offer. With the ability to seat seven, it’s got room for the whole family plus all the gear that comes with them. Fold down the rear seats, and you've got an impressive 1,819 litres of boot space, enough for a weekend's worth of camping gear or even the odd IKEA haul.

The Sleep Pack

Perhaps the most intriguing addition to the Jogger Extreme is the optional sleep kit. It's designed for those who like to take their adventures off the beaten path and want the flexibility of a camper without committing to a full conversion.

The sleep pack includes a folding mattress and a modular storage unit that fits neatly into the boot. When you’re ready to call it a night, the second row seats fold flat, and you can stretch out on the mattress, turning the Jogger into a makeshift camper. It's not the height of luxury, but it’s a clever solution for anyone looking to explore the great outdoors without splashing out on a full-blown campervan. The bed itself is comfortable enough for a night or two, though taller folk might find it a bit snug. Also, getting in and out is fun!

What’s more, the storage unit provides ample space for stashing away your essentials, from cooking gear to clothes, keeping the cabin neat and tidy. For families or adventurous couples, the sleep kit is a game-changer, offering the chance to extend your trip without needing to book accommodation.

There’s also an additional tent that attaches to the rear of the Jogger, this makes it more practical, especially if you have a small family to consider.

Comfort and Practicality

Comfort is where the Jogger really shines, especially for the price point. The seats are supportive, and there’s ample legroom for passengers in the first and second rows. The third row, as expected in most seven-seaters, is a little more cramped, but it’s fine for kids or shorter journeys.

The negative is that the front passenger seat is at a fixed height, therefore any tall passengers will probably moan that their forward vision is hampered as they’re staring at the top of the windscreen, you know, the part that’s always filthy.

Climate control, decent visibility from the raised seating position, and a generally spacious cabin make long journeys a doddle. The only minor quibble is that the materials, while durable, aren’t the softest, so if you’re after plush interiors, you might be left wanting. But for families who prioritise function and durability, it’s ideal.

Practicality wise, the Jogger excels. Whether you’re using it for the school run, a weekend escape, or packing it to the rafters for a holiday, it handles it all with ease. The split-folding seats give you plenty of flexibility, and the roof rails are perfect for adding extra cargo capacity if needed.

Safety

Safety-wise, the Jogger Extreme comes well-equipped. There’s a host of standard features, including front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and a suite of airbags. It also boasts hill start assist and automatic emergency braking (AEB), which are great for added peace of mind when venturing off the beaten path.

While it might not have the most advanced safety tech on the market, what’s included is more than adequate for a vehicle at this price point. The Jogger's solid build and elevated ride height add to the feeling of security, making it a safe bet for family outings and weekend adventures alike.

Conclusion

In the world of affordable crossovers, the 2024 Dacia Jogger Extreme stands out for its rugged charm, practicality, and surprising versatility. While it may not be the most luxurious or capable off-roader, it does a little bit of everything, and it does it well. The Grip Extender offers more off-road capability than you'd expect, and the sleep kit is a brilliant addition for those looking to embrace adventure on a budget.

Whether you’re navigating the school run or venturing into the great outdoors, the Jogger Extreme is a no-nonsense, reliable companion. And in true Dacia style, it offers fantastic value for money, making it an excellent choice for families or couples with a taste for adventure.
