Therm-a-Rest Honcho Poncho
When it comes to outdoor adventures, whether you're off-roading in your 4x4, enjoying a weekend of wild camping, or simply embracing the British weather on a drizzly day out, having versatile gear is key. Enter the Therm-a-Rest Honcho Poncho, a clever bit of kit that’s got you covered - literally!
Warmth Meets Comfort
The Honcho Poncho is like your favourite blanket and raincoat had a baby, and the result is an insulated, water-resistant poncho that can keep you toasty on chilly evenings. Made with EraLoft™ insulation, it provides warmth without bulk, meaning you won’t feel like you’re walking around in a duvet, but you’ll still be cosy when the temperature drops.
One of the best features of the Honcho Poncho is how easy it is to throw on. There’s no faff with zips or buttons – just slip it over your head and you’re good to go. It's lightweight enough to stash in your daypack, and because it packs down into its own storage pocket, it won’t take up much space, which is always a bonus when you're packing for a camping trip. And, in true British fashion, if the weather suddenly takes a turn, the poncho is water-resistant, helping to keep you dry when those unexpected showers roll in.
Plus, it’s equipped with a practical kangaroo pocket - great for stashing your phone, head torch, or just for keeping your hands warm when the temperature dips, and the storage pocket becomes a large front zipped pouch that easily holds your maps and more.
Not just for wearing, the Honcho Poncho can double as a large blanket, perfect for impromptu picnics or extra insulation when your sleeping bag’s not quite cutting it.
While the Honcho Poncho is an obvious choice for campers and adventurers, it's just as handy for festivals or for sitting outside in the garden on a breezy evening.
Its multipurpose nature makes it a winner, and it’s the sort of thing you can keep in the car ‘just in case’.
Any Drawbacks?
Now, as with all good things, the Honcho Poncho isn’t without its quirks. For starters, its one-size-fits-most design may not suit everyone. If you're on the petite side (so you can have a idea on the size we are both around the 6 foot mark) you may feel a little swamped by the width! Also, while it’s water-resistant, it’s not fully waterproof, so if you're caught in a serious downpour, you might still feel the damp creeping in.
Another minor niggle is that, unlike its Down version, the poncho only has one popper fastener on each side which, although making a handy sleeve, leaves the sides open which could let breezes in if you are up and about - that said it is so wide that there is a lot of material to hopefully stop it coming in.
Our Verdict
Whether you’re huddled around a campfire, watching the sunset from your roof tent, or just lounging at home on a blustery Sunday, the poncho’s versatility is hard to beat. It’s warm, practical, and packs away easily, making it a solid addition to your camping gear. While it may have a few minor drawbacks, they’re easy to overlook when you’re warm, dry, and loving life around the campfire.
