Review: EcoFlow RIVER 3
EcoFlow’s latest addition to the River line, the RIVER 3, offers a smart, compact solution for portable power. Built for campers, adventurers, and anyone in need of a reliable power backup at home. With an array of ports, quick charging, and a sleek, quiet design, the RIVER 3 continues EcoFlow’s trend of delivering well-crafted, high-performance products.
The RIVER 3 line-up now consists of the RIVER, RIVER Plus and RIVER Max, and I was fortunate enough to be sent the former quite a few months ago to get to grips with.
Compact and Convenient: The Perfect Travel Companion
If there’s one thing the RIVER 3 nails, it’s portability. Weighing in at a mere 3.5kg and boasting dimensions more akin to a large lunchbox, it’s the perfect size for all kinds of adventures. Whether you’re off on a weekend camping trip, spending a day at the beach, or preparing for a bit of power security at home, the RIVER 3 has you covered without the bulk.
EcoFlow has clearly aimed to make this unit as user-friendly as possible. A built-in handle makes it a breeze to carry, and its sleek, minimalist design looks right at home whether it’s set up in your camper van or on the kitchen counter. Unlike the usual clunky, industrial-looking power stations, the RIVER 3’s elegant aesthetics mean it can blend seamlessly into any setting.
Power on Demand: Performance Meets Portability
While the RIVER 3 isn’t designed to power entire households or large setups like camper vans, it’s more than up to the task of handling the essentials. The heart of the device is a 245Wh LifePO4 battery, which outputs 300W of continuous power and has a boost mode up to 600W, allowing it to manage most small appliances and electronic devices. For example, it can power a 9W light for 17hrs , charge a smartphone over 25 times, or 3W router for 30 hours.
With five outlets, it hasn’t been uncommon for me to arrive at camp, plug in both my iPad, iPhone and Insta360 X3, then plug in my 12v kettle for a brew whilst my Outwell Squal Tent Pump inflates my tent, and my air mattress - epic! That said, being the baby of the range, you will soon run out of power using it like this.
One particularly handy feature is the unit’s versatility in different environments, thanks to its IP54 rating for dust and water resistance. This ruggedness, combined with its 1.5-meter drop resistance and fireproof build, makes it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
While it’s hard to fault the selection, some might wish for an extra USB-C port to cater to more recent tech. However, for the size and target audience, this minor limitation is understandable. The 100W USB-C alone is a big plus for quickly charging laptops and other devices that support Power Delivery.
Fast Charging: Plug It In and Go
EcoFlow has built a reputation for excellent fast-charging capabilities, and the RIVER 3 keeps the standard high. Plugged into a wall outlet, it charges from empty to full in just under an hour. This speed is perfect for those moments when you’re in a hurry, allowing you to top up the River 3 quickly before heading out.
If you’re off the grid, the RIVER 3 supports solar charging up to 110W, so you can tap into the power of the sun while camping or during an outdoor adventure. EcoFlow also includes a 12V car charger, though it’s slower than the wall or solar options, making it more of a backup method. Altogether, these options mean you have the flexibility to recharge almost anywhere, without lengthy downtime.
Staying Connected with the EcoFlow App
Adding a touch of modern convenience, the RIVER 3 comes with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, allowing you to control the power station through the EcoFlow app. Through the app, you can check battery levels, control power output, and toggle features, which is an impressive feature for a power station of this size and price. The app also integrates other EcoFlow products if you have them, allowing for a unified experience if you’re an EcoFlow fan.
Though some may consider the app control unnecessary for a smaller unit, it’s hard to deny the convenience. With the ability to manage settings remotely, the app adds a layer of ease that enhances the overall experience, especially when you want to monitor power levels or make adjustments without being near the device.
Uninterrupted Power: A Mini UPS
One of the RIVER 3’s standout features is its uninterruptible power supply (UPS) functionality. This means that in the event of a power cut, the River 3 automatically kicks in with a 20ms response time, providing peace of mind for those who rely on devices that must stay online, such as a router or small medical devices. This mini UPS feature, often found in more expensive power stations, is an invaluable addition for anyone wanting emergency power backup at home.
Quiet, Efficient, and Safe
Noise can often be an issue with portable power stations, but EcoFlow has managed to keep the RIVER 3 as close to silent as possible. The unit operates at less than 30 decibels—about the sound level of a whisper. Even when working at full capacity, the fan remains impressively quiet, which is ideal for indoor use or when you’re trying to enjoy a peaceful camping trip.
EcoFlow’s focus on durability and safety is evident in the RIVER 3’s construction. The device is rated to withstand high temperatures and has a UL 94V-0 fireproof rating, adding an extra layer of reliability. These safety features make it a practical choice for families or anyone who values a low-maintenance, worry-free device.
Final Verdict: Who Is the RIVER 3 For?
With a 5-year warranty and a lifespan of 3000 charging cycles, that’s around 10 years of everyday use before its capacity drops to 80%, EcoFlow’s RIVER 3 is a well-rounded, highly portable power station that’s ideal for those who need reliable power without the bulk. Priced at around £239 (often available on sale), it offers fantastic value for a high-quality device that combines performance with portability. While it’s not built for extensive off-grid living, it’s more than capable for weekend trips, day-to-day use, and emergency backup.
For campers, outdoor enthusiasts, or those seeking an affordable power station to keep essential devices running, the RIVER 3 hits the mark. It’s an impressive solution that’s as practical as it is stylish, making it easy to recommend for anyone needing portable power.
