Leatherman Wave Multitool
A while back I wrote a couple of group product reviews on multitools, one for the now defunct Land Rover World magazine, and later for Practical Caravan and it’s sister magazine, Practical Motorhome. Out of the 6 or so Multitools that I put to work, there were 2 that stood out, one of which was the Leatherman Wave.
According to their website, the Wave is one of their most popular tools, and after only a few minutes of use I can see why. The Wave does pretty much everything you ask of it whilst feeling comfortable and sturdy. I particularly like the interchangeable slotted and Phillips heads which helps to save space, not to mention the easy access to its incredibly sharp blades. You do need fingernails to access some of the tools, but once opened they lock into place securely. It's worth noting that all 4 tools that are on the outside, both blades, saw and file, can be easily opened using just one hand.
The Wave has the following tools:
- Scissors
- Wood/metal file
- Diamond coated file
- Saw
- Bottle opener
- Can opener
- 8" | 19cm ruler
- Phillips & flat tip eyeglasses screwdriver bit.
- 25 year guarantee
- 420HC stainless steel clip point knife
- 420HC sheepsfoot serrated blade
- Needle nose pliers
- Wire cutters
- Hard wire cutters
- Wire stripper
- Large screwdriver
- Small bit driver
- Large bit driver
Even after a couple of years of use the Wave hasn't lost any of its sturdiness, it still feels like new. If I have one criticism, it's that it doesn't have a spring action when using its pliers, unlike its cheaper sibling, the Leatherman Wingman. It does come with a black leather holder that's heavy duty, yet subtle and can be attached to you belt.
At time of writing, if you buy the Wave from Leatherman’s website, not only do you get a free LED torch, but there’s also the opportunity to grab your self some extras, like a ‘bit kit’, personalised laser engraving and other bits.
To sum it up, the Wave is a very good multitool that's not only easy to use, but also feels comfortable. It could be argued that other multitools have more gadgets and are possibly more compact, but in my humble opinion, the Wave is a decent workhorse with a good selection of useful tools.
