Elliot Brown Canford Watch Review

They say that young people these days don’t buy watches, instead they use their mobile phones to tell the time.  They’re a strange bunch, next you’ll be telling me that they don’t carry pocket knives around either…

As of this moment, it’s been 12 days since I handed my watch in for a service, it’s the same watch I’ve worn everyday for the last 17 years, and I miss it, I really can’t seem to manage without a watch.  Fortunately, Elliot Brown have sent me one of their Canford watches to review, much to my relief, good timing or what? Snigger...

Elliot Brown, in case you weren't aware, is a British brand that's backed up with decades of experience.  Ian Elliot was co-founder of Animal back in '88, and built the brand up from a single, innovative, functional product - an 'unbreakable' watch-strap.  Alex Brown on the other hand (see what I did there?) turned down a job at Cartier because it sounded more interesting to establish Animal's watch department, where he stayed for seventeen years.

So, what about the watch?  Well, my watch for the fortnight was their 202-009 version of the Canford and came with the rich oxblood-burgundy leather strap, unique brushed gunmetal case and sunray-silver dial.  This, they say, is their most popular and most individual watch they produce.

What I liked about the Canford was that its beauty lies in the depth of the detailing, so it’s not just a pretty face as all its major components are made from 316L Marine grade stainless steel.

Its crowns are push action with triple seals and knurled so they are easy to grip with wet, cold or muddy hands.  The caseback is secured with 6 hex bolts set to a particular torque setting to ensure a perfect seal and to hold the unique Elliot Brown anti-shock movement housing in just the right position.  It houses Swiss made 5-jewel quartz movement and a 5 year battery life with EOL indication.

The quality doesn’t stop there, as I mentioned, there’s a wide variety of beautifully made straps on offer in a range of leathers and fabrics.  Strap pins are machined from solid stainless steel and simply screw in, so strap changes are quick and easy.  Every strap has a secure deployment clasp – the solid stainless steel bracelets have micro adjustment to conveniently fit over a wetsuit, and of course it’s water-resistant to ISO2281 and individually tested to 20ATM/200m and shock-resistant to ISO1413.

The Cranford is available in eighteen different styles and three case finishes including black, bead-blasted gun-metal, or brushed and polished stainless steel. There are interchangeable strapping options that include ballistic nylon webbing, solid steel bracelet, and oiled leather.

Overall I was very impressed, the Canford is a tough, waterproof and shock resistant yet incredibly smart watch that can be worn anywhere without looking out of place, perfect for the outdoor type person who also needs a watch that's as reliable as it's smart and tough.
