Redback Boot Wax
A while back you may remember that I wrote that I'd been abusing my pair of Redback boots that Gavin from bushgear.co.uk had kindly sent me - here's the link in case you missed it - Redback.
After a quick chat with Gavin it transpired that he also stocks Redback Boot Wax, which given the amount of neglect that my pair had suffered from, they desperately needed, so I ordered a tin.
As per usual they were thoroughly caked in mud, so after cleaning them in warm water using a soft brush I left them outside to dry and fully air. The instructions recommend not expose the boots to a heat source as this will eventually make the leather tough and brittle, so don’t leave them to dry in front of a fire!
Once dry I went about them as I would with any shoe or boot, using a clean cloth I applied a small, pea sized amount of wax and I massaged it evenly into the boot until it was no longer visible.
Of course, regular waxing will greatly extend the lifespan of your Redbacks, or any leather boots as it helps to maintain the natural moisture resistance of the leather, in turn helping to keep your feet dry and warm, so it’s a no-brainer.
As I couldn’t remember the last time I waxed them I really took my time and gave them 3 thin thorough coats and another going over the following day.
I must admit they looked great, no longer faded but now a lovely rich, deep brown colour. Of course this is a wax not a polish, so your leather boots are never going to shine, but they will look and feel a whole lot healthier.
Redback recommend that you should wax your boots several times a year, but as I wear mine pretty much on a daily basis from walking through dusty and muddy fields to dining out with Muddy Madam, I’ve started to wax them once a month, and the difference is noticeable. It could be my imagination but my feet appear dryer after a long day of activities which probably means that the leather is breathing more efficiently than they had previously, and of course water beads off them which means it isn't soaking into the leather anymore.
My conclusion
Even if you don’t own a pair of Redback boots (though you really should) I can’t recommend this wax enough, not only has it given my Redbacks a new lease of life, but I've also treated my 25-year old Zamberlan Mountain Lites to a coating too, and the difference is amazing!
