Chums Upcycled Cotton Eyewear Retainer

Here at Muddy HQ, both of us have light coloured eyes, and so we try not to leave the house without sunglasses. The problems that come with that is that the Great British weather likes to taunt us with the sun. One minute it is burning our retinas, next a dirty great cloud has blocked out all but the minimum of light, and when you are out’n’about it means you are constantly popping on and taking off your sunglasses, or doing the ‘rest them on the top of your head’ manoeuvre.

If you are in the first category, you need to find a place to put them - hang them from your shirt, pop them in a pocket or if you are a bag carrier pop them back in the case (not at all a faff!🤨).If you are the second group you have the delight of hoping they stay put without leaving an imprint on your forehead.

I have to admit to being in both, but I have had a lot of disasters that have ended up with broken glasses.

Whilst bending over a pair fell from my T-shirt onto a concrete floor - broken. I once popped my glasses in the pocket of my loose slacks, and when I got into my car, after having forgotten about them, I snapped the arm off - broken. Whilst walking Lilly I ended up in a dark wooded area and placed my glasses above the top of my cap’s visor, again I forgot about them when I took off my cap, and the glasses fell off, which I didn’t hear. I had to do a long backtrack to find them in a pile of sloppy mud - this time not broken, but very icky.

And Damian is not immune, the amount of times he has taken off his sunnies whilst hopping in and out of 4x4s, only for them to fall out of the door and onto rocks or mud, is more than I care to mention.

Now I am not telling these stories because I have a random need to tell you how clumsy we both are. No, it’s because I think I’ve finally found a great solution to keeping your glasses secure during all of these scenarios - these Chums Upcycled Cotton retainers.

Glasses cords have been around for a very long time, but unless you really wanted to emulate Mrs Slocombe from Are You Being Served (a 70s sitcom for you young ‘uns), they were always thought of as a bit passé. Then there was the way you attached the cords with flimsy loops which never made you confident they would stay put, so I never bothered.

When I came across these Chums retainers I was pleasantly surprised.

They don’t have the problems of the cords and chains, in that the material is really comfy on the neck, and they don’t hang around your face when the glasses are on. There is also a toggle than can be moved up and down to tighten or extend, so you can use it if you need to keep your glasses secure when you are doing more active pursuits.

The way they attach is to simply push the end of the glasses arm into the open end of the cloth tube. I don’t know what they have done to achieve the grip, but those glasses aren’t coming back out again without a really good tug. I tried them out on a variety of sunglasses with different sized ends and they kept all very secure.

I also like their Eco Credentials…

These retainers are made of 52% upcycled cotton - upcycled cotton is produced from textile waste, which is frayed and reduced again to fibre and then spun again, and 48% post-user recycled PET - material that is made from the items that consumers recycle every day, like aluminum, cardboard boxes, paper, and plastic bottles.

Glasses and sunglasses can cost a significant amount of pennies, so at only £9 why wouldn’t you grab yourself one of these Upcycled Cotton retainers to protect your specs, it’s a no-brainer!

They come in a choice of 11 colours if you like to coordinate with your glasses,.
