VW’s Scout Motors Introduces Traveler SUV and Terra Truck as Production-Intent Concepts

Scout Motors, VW's US-only brand revival, has revealed its first models: the Traveler SUV and Terra truck, both labelled as “production-intent concepts” for now. These retro-styled electric off-roaders channel the 1960s and ‘70s original Scout heritage, blending nostalgic charm with modern grit.

At the heart of each vehicle is an in-house body-on-frame chassis with some serious hardware—a solid rear axle and locking diffs front and rear. The dual electric motors are set to churn out a hefty 1,000 lb-ft of torque, delivering four-wheel drive that gets you from 0-60 mph in around 3.5 seconds.

While the battery details remain a mystery, Scout claims a solid 350-mile range for both models, thanks to an 800V electrical setup with 350kW rapid-charging capacity and bi-directional charging. And if full EV isn't your thing, range-extending versions will also be available, pushing the range beyond 500 miles.

When it comes to muscle, the Traveler SUV can tow up to 3,175kg, while the Terra truck maxes out at 4,536kg, and both carry nearly a tonne of payload. Expect other rugged essentials like 35” tyres, over a foot of ground clearance, a proper spare, heavy-duty winch, and nearly a metre of wading depth for tackling whatever lies ahead.

Inside, there’s a mix of touchscreens and physical buttons, along with high-res cameras and hard-wearing upholstery designed for adventure. Each model even boasts a “frunk” with 120V and USB-C ports for extra functionality.

The Terra adds a few truck-specific features too, like an optional front bench seat and a 5.5-foot bed with two 120V sockets and a 240V outlet. Plus, there’s a choice of roof options—open-air, panoramic glass, you name it.

Come 2027, the Terra is set to roll out as a rival to the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, and Tesla Cybertruck, with the Traveler SUV potentially benefiting from the upcoming US ban on Chinese-connected cars around the same time.

Scout is talking a base price starting at $60,000 (£46,000), with incentives possibly dropping that to $50,000 (£38,000). Of course, those numbers are subject to change, but if they stick, these Scouts could make some serious waves in the rugged EV market.
