What is it?

When it comes to the world of luxury estates, few names carry the weight and prestige of the Audi A6 Avant. The 2024 Audi A6 Avant TFSI e Black Edition 50 TFSI e Quattro S tronic isn't just a car with a very long name, and sounds like someone let their cat walk across the keyboard, it’s a statement.

The Audi A6 has been a staple in the luxury saloon and estate market since its introduction bak in 1994. The Avant, Audi’s term for their estate models, has always been the practical sibling to the saloon, offering the same level of luxury and performance with the added bonus of more boot space.

The introduction of the TFSI e variant marks a significant step in the A6's evolution, embracing the future with hybrid technology. TFSI, or Turbocharged Fuel Stratified Injection, combined with electric power, offers a balance of performance and efficiency. The Black Edition adds a touch of exclusivity, featuring unique design elements that set it apart from the standard models.

On the road

Sublime, actually. Regular readers may recall that once a year it’s my job to chauffeur Muddy Madam, Muddy Madam senior, Lilly The Mud Life dog and a heap of associated gubbins down to Great Yarmouth. It’s not a place I would naturally visit as it’s a long and drawn out drive, around 5-1/2 hours, so I always ask for a press car that’s large, sleek and comfortable.

From the M62, A1, A17 and A47, driving the A6 Avant TFSI e is akin to gliding on a freshly laid tarmac. The air suspension adapts to the road surface, providing a ride that is both comfortable and composed. The hybrid setup allows for near-silent electric-only driving at lower speeds, perfect for those early morning commutes or when you simply want to enjoy the peace and quiet.

When you need a bit more oomph, the petrol engine kicks in seamlessly, providing ample power for overtaking or merging onto motorways. The transition between electric and petrol power is virtually imperceptible, showcasing Audi's engineering prowess.

The only thing that did give me cause for concern was the fairly low 34mpg. A diesel would have far more efficient, but hey, they’re out of fashion.

On the topic of what powers the 2024 Audi A6 Avant TFSI is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, producing a combined output of 299hp. This powertrain is mated to Audi’s renowned quattro all-wheel-drive system, ensuring superb grip and handling in all conditions. The S tronic dual-clutch transmission offers smooth and rapid gear changes, making for an engaging driving experience whether you're pottering around town or cruising on the motorway.

Interior

Step inside the A6 Avant TFSI e, and you’re greeted with a cabin that exudes sophistication. The Black Edition trim adds a touch of sportiness with its dark, sleek accents and high-quality materials. The leather seats are both supportive and plush, perfect for long journeys. The driver’s seat comes with multiple adjustment options, ensuring you find the perfect driving position with ease.

The tech suite is impressive. The Virtual Cockpit offers a customisable digital display, allowing you to keep all essential information right in your line of sight. The MMI Touch Response system features two large screens with haptic feedback, making navigating through menus a breeze. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard, of course, ensuring you stay connected on the go.

The spacious interior ensures that both front and rear passengers have ample legroom and headroom. The rear seats can comfortably accommodate three adults, with heated seats available as an option for added luxury.  That said, they might be a tad disappointed that the rear seats lack any kind of reclining action - and there’s no rear USB points, but there were no complaints from Muddy Madam senior, nor Lilly, and even if there were I wouldn’t have heard them over the great sound system.

One of the key selling points of an estate is its boot space, and the A6 Avant does not disappoint. With the rear seats up, you get a generous 565 litres of boot space, perfect for your weekly shop or a weekend getaway. Fold the rear seats down, and this expands to a cavernous 1,680 litres, providing enough room for larger items or even a couple of mountain bikes.  In our case, Muddy Madam’s Cosplay gear, our Ecoflow Glacier fridge freezer and numerous suitcases and bags.

Conclusion

Although I was slightly disappointed with its fuel economy (I managed 62mpg out of the Skoda Octavia vRS 2.0ltr diesel the during the same trip last year), the A6 Avant was a lovely experience.
